Ham radio news sources pointed out many communication techniques were utilized getting traffic in and out of affected areas. We went from wondering if ham radio was still relevant in emergency situations to rethinking training for extended deployment scenarios, all within a matter of weeks. Irma impacted the state of Florida and Maria devastated the relatively poor U.S. This left many hams wondering, ‘are we at the point where our infrastructure is stable enough to survive a category 4 hurricane?’ ‘Are hams still relevant since we were not needed for this type of event?’ We got the answer to those questions over the next month with two category 5 hurricanes.
